The Refectory Restaurant and Bistro offers diners in Columbus, OH a relaxed and elegant dining experience. Owned by Kamal Boulos, and featuring the cuisine of French native, Chef Richard Blondin, The Refectory offers contemporary American and classic French dishes, a world-class wine cellar, knowledgeable staff, and a personal touch, creating a memorable dining experience.
The Refectory came to Dot The i Creative with a relatively outdated and over-encumbered website. The look and feel had become old and needed a refresh. The functionality was being bogged down by the restaurant offering many different events, specials, menus, and shopping opportunities. This was causing information to get lost on the website, no longer serving users and becoming ineffective.
Dot The i Creative began with a comprehensive Search Engine Optimization (SEO) audit of the current website as well a competitive analysis of similar restaurants in the area. Addressing the SEO deficits found, our design team got to work organizing content and designing the site with a more contemporary feel. The modernized design included more white space, a brighter color palette, and interactive content. By welcoming users with more interesting imagery of both the food and of the experience, the website saw a dramatic increase to repeated visits from viewers. The user interface of implementing a mega menu drop down navigation bar was better suited to handle the multitude of different options being presented to the user quickly and clearly. The end result of this effort was an increase to user conversion for reservations, gift card orders, and most recently, online food and drink orders.
Marketing Automation Services
While the Refectory had an existing ESP (Email Service Provider), they felt their capabilities were limited to simple “email blasts” that showcased everything they had to offer. They also wanted to expand their wine purchasing service and needed a robust system to help them track it so they could offer a more concierge approach in the future. Utilizing Marketing Automation with a tool called SharpSpring, we have been able to segment customers by interest. This has allowed their internal marketing team to create personalized content quickly and send out efficiently to keep customers up to date. The workflows we created within their instance have automated wine order notifications, correspondence, and follow up tasks for their team to track of orders and cultivate new sales opportunities. The all-in-one reporting SharpSpring provides has also allowed them to better track and measure all marketing efforts.

To freshen up the brand, Dot The i Creative partnered with photographer Robb McCormick to facilitate a photo shoot that captured the atmosphere, and the magnificent food coming out of Chef Blondin’s kitchen. These new images are used across all marketing channels and the response among a broader age demographic has been significant.

The Refectory’s website has an international page ranking of 22millionth place while primary competitors in the market were averaging a 3 millionth ranking. Within 2 months of the initial website design, the Refectory caught up with their competition. Now, after the second iteration of the website and SEO efforts; The Refectory now has an international ranking of 578,517 and a ranking of 112,537th in the United States. Their website has surpassed their competitors.
